Woods White with fire
Poems of Shantiam
At a Distance
Weeks from goodbye -
above the sleepy rooftops
on a misty morning sky
a hazy star still twinkles.
These dreary rains at night
drench the sodden soil.
Another day of toil
for the drudging horses
taking me away from you.
Remembering your musky scent
I rise from this creaky bed
with sleepy eyes and shoulders bent
I push away my dreams of you.
Think of me at the start of day,
I need to feel your love.
While you are back there, far away,
I need to feed my love.
A cheery morning breeze
blows away the rain.
Another day of strain
in the rumbling coach
taking me away from you.
Weeks until welcome -
above awaking rooftops
on a clearing sky, a winsome
early sun now rises.
