Woods White with fire
Poems of Shantiam
Silence
Like the rain
dances silence in my room, unbroken
like the rain
drums silence on the window of my soul
So alone, pale moon, forgotten in the morning sky
alone, too far ahead a new soundless night
Like a wave
rolls silence through this mind of mine once more
like a wave
washes silence over this heavy heart
I wish away this darkest, merciless silence
under this crushing silence my aching shoulders stoop
Like a scream
silence pierces these hollow trees
like a scream
silence echoes in the maze of my mind
Now songless birds leave these woods of mine
where moss-covered trees grow tiny mute apples
Like a knife
sharp silence cuts my faltering speech
like a knife
presses silence into my singing heart
And wordless I follow its relentless advance
as it spreads on dry grass of my hopes like a fire
as it blows them as smoke in the air thick with tears
My heart
so heavy with solitude
exhausted of endless darkness
My heart
still filled with a hopeless desire
to be lover to lover
beloved to beloved
From an open attack I would not hide
give a sneer, give me a weapon
but where to run from indifference
poisonous, unbroken silence
